What is Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people around the world. It occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels and provides energy for the body. Without insulin, people with type 1 diabetes have high blood sugar levels that can damage various organs and tissues.

People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day to survive. They also need to monitor their blood sugar levels regularly, follow a healthy diet, exercise, and manage stress. Type 1 diabetes can cause serious complications, such as heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, eye problems, and foot ulcers. However, with proper care and treatment, people with type 1 diabetes can live long and healthy lives.

The Diabetic Wellness Initiative is a nonprofit organization that aims to improve the quality of life for people with type 1 diabetes and their families by supplying medical supplies to places where children gather, like schools. We provide education, support, advocacy, and research to help people with type 1 diabetes manage their condition and prevent complications. We also raise awareness and funds for finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Some of our programs and services include:

  • Diabetes education and counseling: We offer online and in-person classes, workshops, webinars, and podcasts on various topics related to type 1 diabetes, such as nutrition, exercise, mental health, technology, and more. We also provide individual and group counseling sessions with certified diabetes educators, psychologists, and peer mentors.
  • Diabetes support groups and events: We organize and facilitate support groups and events for people with type 1 diabetes and their families, such as camps, retreats, social outings, and fundraisers. We also partner with other organizations and communities to create and promote diabetes-friendly activities and resources.
  • Diabetes advocacy and policy: We advocate for the rights and needs of people with type 1 diabetes at the local, state, and national levels. We work with lawmakers, insurers, employers, schools, and healthcare providers to ensure that people with type 1 diabetes have access to affordable and quality diabetes care and supplies. We also educate the public and the media about the realities and challenges of living with type 1 diabetes.
  • Diabetes research and innovation: We support and collaborate with researchers and innovators who are working to find better ways to prevent, treat, and cure type 1 diabetes. We fund and participate in clinical trials, studies, and projects that aim to improve the outcomes and quality of life for people with type 1 diabetes. We also encourage and empower people with type 1 diabetes to get involved in diabetes research and innovation.
